German Yannick Hanfmann defeated Poland's Kamil Majchrzak in the first round of the ATP Masters 1000 tournament in Shanghai, China. The match lasted 3 hours and 12 minutes and ended 6:7 (4), 7:6 (3), 7:6 (7) in Hanfmann's favor, Interia Sport reports.

No breaks in three sets

All three sets went to tie-breaks, and the opponents did not record a single break in 36 games. In the first set, Majchrzak took a 5:0 lead in the tie-break, but Hanfmann narrowed the gap to 4:5. The Pole won the next two points on his opponent's serve and took the set.

In the second set, Majchrzak had two break opportunities each in the fifth and seventh games, but Hanfmann saved them thanks to his first serve. At 5:4, the Pole also saved a set point. In the tie-break, the German took a 4:1 lead and eventually levelled the score in sets.

Three match points for Hanfmann

At the start of the deciding set, Majchrzak saved a break point. At 4:4, he had two opportunities to break, but did not convert them. In the third tie-break, Hanfmann led 3:0, but Majchrzak equalised the score at 3:3.

The Polish tennis player saved two match points at 5:6 and 6:7. Hanfmann's 25th ace of the match gave him a third opportunity to finish the match, which he converted. In the second round of the tournament, the German will face American Frances Tiafoe, ranked 10th in the ATP rankings.
