Griquas in South Africa win the Currie Cup for the second consecutive time
Rugby club Griquas in Kimberley, South Africa, defeated the Pumas 23:16 in the Carling Currie Cup final and won the title for the second consecutive time. The hosts trailed 10:13 after the first half, but scored 13 points in the second half and held on to their advantage until the final whistle.
As TimesLIVE reports, the match was held at Suzuki Stadium. George Whitehead played a key role in Griquas' victory, with the match being his 150th appearance for the team. He made two conversions and kicked three penalties.
How the final unfolded
Whitehead opened the scoring with a penalty in the eighth minute. The Pumas responded with a try by Darren Adonis following an interception by J-C Nel, while Clinton Swart added the conversion — 7:3. In the 22nd minute, Mnombo Zwelandaba picked up a loose ball and scored Griquas' first try, which Whitehead converted.

Shortly afterward, Swart levelled the score with a penalty, and another successful kick from him before the break put the Pumas ahead — 13:10. In the second half, Whitehead levelled the score with a penalty in the 57th minute. After the teams exchanged penalties, they entered the closing stages of the match level at 16:16.
Decisive try
Five minutes before the end of the match, substitute hooker Janco Uys scored the decisive try after a lineout maul. Whitehead converted it to set the final score at 23:16. Griquas won the title at the same stadium where they lost to the Pumas in the 2022 championship final.
