Tayla Kavanagh and Tshepo Tshite set South African records at the World Athletics Road Running Championships in Copenhagen, Denmark. Kavanagh finished fourth in the women’s 5km race, while Tshite placed 10th in the men’s road mile.
Kavanagh’s 5km record
The 25-year-old Tayla Kavanagh covered the distance in 14 minutes 51 seconds. She was one second behind Australia’s Rose Davies, who finished third. Ethiopia’s Likina Amebaw won in 14:41, while Kenya’s Caroline Gitonga finished second in 14:48.
Kavanagh’s result became a new South African record for the road 5km distance. She surpassed Elana Meyer’s previous national mark of 15 minutes 10 seconds, set in the United States in 1994. As TimesLIVE reports, it is Kavanagh’s first South African record of her career.

Tshepo Tshite finished the men’s road mile in 10th place with a time of 3 minutes 55.66 seconds, setting a South African record in the discipline.
In the men’s 5km race, Maxime Chaumeton also placed 10th, recording 13:13. He was unable to improve his own South African national record of 13:06. In the women’s road mile, Karabo More finished 15th in 4:33.27, slightly slower than Dominique Scott’s record of 4:32.71, set in 2019.
