Leeds thrash Newcastle 4-1 to move into third place in the Premier League
Leeds United thrashed Newcastle United 4-1 at Elland Road in Leeds and moved into third place in the Premier League table. Dawn reports that this defeat was the first for Newcastle head coach Matthias Jaissle.
Four goals for Leeds
During the first 20 minutes, Newcastle's Nico Gonzalez was substituted under the concussion protocol. After that, Lewis Miley's own goal opened the scoring: Ao Tanaka's shot changed direction twice and went into the net.
Two minutes later, Leeds doubled their lead. Dominic Calvert-Lewin headed in James Justin's cross, but the ball touched Jaden Bogle, who was credited with the goal. Soon afterward, Calvert-Lewin scored himself: he went past Sven Botman and struck the ball past goalkeeper Lukas Hornicek. It was his goal in a fifth consecutive league match at Elland Road.

At the start of the second half, Anton Stach could have scored a fourth goal, but after Hornicek's unsuccessful pass, he shot wide. By the 60th minute, Noah Okafor nevertheless made it 4-0, scoring with a volley from outside the penalty area after the visitors' defence failed to clear the ball following a long throw-in.
After the match, Leeds head coach Daniel Farke noted his team's energy, quality and organization of play with and without the ball. In stoppage time, Bazoumana Toure reduced Newcastle's deficit.
After the victory, Leeds have eight points and trail only reigning champions Arsenal and Manchester City in the table. Newcastle remained on five points and dropped to 12th place due to an inferior goal difference.
