Pakistan beat Thailand 9-0 in hockey at the Asian Games — Dawn

Pakistan's men's field hockey team began its Asian Games campaign in Japan with a 9-0 victory over Thailand. The Group B match took place at Gifu Prefectural Green Stadium in Kakamigahara, Dawn reports.

Pakistan's nine goals

Ahmed Nadeem scored a hat-trick, while Sufyan Khan converted two penalty corners. Moin Shakeel opened the scoring in the eighth minute, and Ammad Butt doubled the lead four minutes later.

Nadeem scored his first goal in the 20th minute. Sufyan Khan then scored twice within two minutes. In the third quarter, Rana Waheed scored in the 31st minute and Abdul Hanan Shahid in the 34th. Ahmed Nadeem completed the match with goals in the 37th and 43rd minutes.

Swimming and boxing

In swimming, none of Pakistan's three representatives advanced beyond the heats at the Tokyo Aquatic Centre. Hamza Asif finished second in his 100-metre freestyle heat with a time of 53.97 seconds and ranked 35th among 43 swimmers.

In the women's 50-metre breaststroke, Harim Malik finished last in her heat with a time of 36.52 seconds. Mishael Aisha Hayat also finished last in her heat, recording 37.02 seconds. They ranked 22nd and 24th respectively among 25 participants overall.

The draw for the boxing tournament was also held. Fatima Zehra, in the up to 60 kg category, will face Mijgona Samadova of Tajikistan. Maria Rind received a bye in the preliminary round in the up to 51 kg category. Sumama Rehman, in the 55 kg category, will box against Meroj Sufijonov of Tajikistan, while Irfan Khan, in the up to 90 kg category, will face Gichae Kim of South Korea.
