F1 driver Ocon says he is a free agent for 2027 — Cyprus Mail

French Formula 1 driver Esteban Ocon, in Baku, Azerbaijan, said that he is currently a free agent for next year and is talking to other teams. As Cyprus Mail reports, the driver did not rule out continuing with his current Haas team, but noted that some issues concerning his future do not depend on him.

Negotiations over the future

Ocon told journalists ahead of the Azerbaijan Grand Prix that he would continue working until the end of the year and see how the situation develops. Asked whether he was in talks with other teams, the Frenchman answered in the affirmative. Asked about the possibility of staying at Haas, he replied: “We will see.”

At the beginning of the year, media reported a possible conflict between Ocon and Haas team principal Ayao Komatsu and suggested that the driver might not complete the season with the team. In May, Ocon called those reports fabricated and unfounded. Haas has not yet announced its driver lineup for the 2027 season.

Season results

The 30-year-old Ocon moved to the American Haas last year, when the team formed a new lineup with Briton Oliver Bearman, who is part of Ferrari’s young driver programme. This season, Ocon has scored three points and is 18th among 23 drivers in the overall standings. Bearman has 18 points and is in 13th place.

Ocon became the most recent Haas driver to score points: he finished ninth at the Monaco Grand Prix in June. The Frenchman said that he does not consider his own performances to be a problem this season and recalled the points in Monaco and being close to the points-paying positions at the previous round in Madrid. Ocon claimed his only Formula 1 victory at the 2021 Hungarian Grand Prix with Alpine.

Several media outlets have named Brazilian Rafael Camara, who is backed by Ferrari and is second in the Formula 2 championship, as the favourite to replace Ocon.
