Saudi Arabia’s national team has dropped 23-year-old midfielder Musab Al-Juwayr from its squad for the 27th Arabian Gulf Cup. The team’s technical and administrative staff also excluded the player from the training camp in Jeddah held ahead of the tournament.

Reason not specified

As Channel NewsAsia reports, the national team’s statement cited disciplinary grounds as the reason for the decision. The team did not disclose details of the situation. It also said that Al-Juwayr’s replacement would be named later.

Was included in the 26-player squad

The Al-Qadsiah playmaker had previously been included in the 26-player squad announced this week by national team head coach, Greek Georgios Donis. Al-Juwayr previously played for Al-Hilal and Al-Shabab, and this summer he was part of the Saudi team at the World Cup.

The footballer has made 39 appearances and scored six goals for Saudi Arabia’s national team. The tournament hosts will begin their Group A campaign with a match against Kuwait on Wednesday, followed by games against Oman and Iraq. The competition will take place in Saudi Arabia and run until October 6.
