Svitolina crushed Argentina's Sierra in her US Open opener
On August 31, Ukraine’s top-ranked tennis player, Elina Svitolina, confidently defeated Argentina’s Solana Sierra in the first round of the U.S. Open. The Ukrainian advanced to the second round of the tournament by defeating the world No. 91.
The match lasted only 53 minutes and ended with a score of 6-1, 6-2.
Svitolina started the match so strongly that she took a 5–0 lead within the first 13 minutes of play. She didn’t quite manage a “bagel,” but that wasn’t the goal anyway—6–1.
In the second set, Elina continued to play as aggressively as possible. Her opponent, in an effort to keep up with the pace of the match, made slightly fewer errors than in the first set, but there was no question of parity. The Odessa native won 6–2 and advanced to the second round of the US Open.
During the match, Svitolina hit one ace, committed six double faults, and broke serve four times. Her opponent hit three aces, committed four unforced errors on her serve, and failed to convert a single break point.
It’s worth noting the fantastic 93% of points won on our player’s first serve.
The two players had never faced each other before. In the next round, the Ukrainian will face the winner of the match between Maya Joint (75, Australia) and Lyudmila Samsonova (45, -).
Svitolina’s best result on the courts of New York is the 2019 semifinals.
As a reminder, the US Open kicked off in New York with a record prize pool.
