Svitolina advanced to the quarterfinals of the WTA 500 in Washington after defeating Kudermetova
Ukrainian tennis player Elina Svitolina has advanced to the quarterfinals of the WTA 500 tournament in Washington. In the round of 16, she defeated Polina Kudermetova, who previously represented Russia and now plays for Uzbekistan. Following this victory, the Ukrainian continues her quest for the title on American courts.
The tournament’s No. 2 seed, who entered the competition directly in the second round, won in two sets—7-6(4), 6-4. This was the first time the two players had faced each other.
In the first set, Svitolina came back twice after her opponent broke her serve. With the score at 5–6, Kudermetova failed to convert a set point, after which the Ukrainian forced a tiebreak and won it 7–4.
In the second set, a run of three consecutive games proved decisive: trailing 1–2, Svitolina took a 4–2 lead and eventually closed out the match on her own serve, 6–4.

Svitolina advanced to the quarterfinals of the Washington tournament for the second time in her career, matching her best result set in 2023.
In the semifinal, the Ukrainian will face Alexandra Eala of the Philippines. In June, at the tournament in Berlin, Svitolina lost to her in two sets—3:6, 4:6.
