Apple Maps changes Lake Ontario’s name to “Lake America”
In Apple Maps, the name of Lake Ontario has been changed to “Lake America.” The company joined Google, which had previously also updated the name of the body of water, The Verge reports.
Names in different versions of the app
According to Bloomberg, the Canadian version of Apple Maps still lists “Lake Ontario” when viewing this area. At the same time, international versions of the app display both names.
Google updated the designation shortly after the new name appeared in the U.S. Geographic Names Information System (GNIS). Apple did so later.

Trump’s executive order
According to The Verge, the renaming took place following an executive order by U.S. President Donald Trump, signed amid a trade dispute with Canada.
Earlier, Apple and Google changed the name of the Gulf of Mexico to “Gulf of America” in their services after another Trump executive order. The MapQuest service has not changed the names of either Lake Ontario or the Gulf of Mexico.
