Apple has removed the Russian messaging app Max from the App Store

The American technology company Apple has removed the Russian messaging app Max from its App Store. The app is now unavailable for download by users of Apple devices. No official reason has been given for this decision. Previously, the Max messenger was positioned as one of Russia’s digital services for messaging and communication between users.

The press service of the app’s developer, VK, stated that they “have sent a request to the American corporation Apple asking for clarification and are working on a prompt resolution of the issue.”

It is noted that Max users were informed on Thursday that, due to the app’s removal from the App Store, notifications about calls and messages would not appear on Apple devices, but the messages themselves would be delivered and all features would remain available.

Users were advised to keep the app on their phones and “open it occasionally themselves so as not to miss important messages.”

In late April, the global service Cloudflare labeled the Max messenger’s domains as spyware. The label was later removed but then reinstated. Thus, the messenger is currently classified as spyware.

At the time of its removal, Max was in ninth place on the list of the most downloaded apps in the Russian App Store.

The remaining spots in the top ten were occupied by VPN services.

As is well known, Russia blocked a number of social media platforms back in 2022. In 2025, amid the war with Ukraine, Russian authorities blocked calls to WhatsApp and Telegram under the pretext of protecting against scammers.

At the same time, Russia began rolling out the Max messenger.
