Apple says it used AI and 3D printing to manufacture the Duo hinge
Apple said it used artificial intelligence algorithms and 3D printing in the manufacturing of the hinge for its first foldable smartphone, Duo. The company unveiled the device during the Surprise and Shine event, reports TechCrunch.
Selecting parts with AI
According to Apple hardware chief Johny Srouji, during manufacturing, AI algorithms select the housing that best matches each individual hinge. The company says this is intended to ensure precise alignment of the parts.
Apple also uses a confocal laser that progressively scans the topology of each device. The 3D-printing technology applies up to 25 micro-layers of a special photopolymer to eliminate residual unevenness.

Protection against wear
Apple said that the Duo’s design includes several solutions to improve the durability of the foldable smartphone. In addition to the hinge, the device received a special nano-texture coating that, according to the company, significantly reduces glare and reflections.
The company also used a multilayer lamination strategy to increase the device’s strength. However, how much these solutions will help preserve the smartphone’s physical condition during long-term use remains to be tested.
