Google will allow users to disable visible watermarks on AI-generated content
Google will allow users to remove visible watermarks from images, videos, and songs created using its AI models. At the same time, the invisible SynthID watermark and metadata associated with the C2PA standard will remain in the files, TechCrunch reports.
According to Gemini Vice President Josh Woodward, the toggle will be available for the Nano Banana, Omni, and Lyria models. Users will be able to turn the visible watermark on or off in Gemini and the Google Flow video editor. The company plans to add support for this option in Search at a later date.
The feature will be rolled out over the next few days. Once it’s available, the setting will be accessible in the Settings menu under the Media Watermark section.

Woodward stated that Google aims to balance users’ creative control with security requirements. According to him, thanks to SynthID and C2PA metadata, Gemini and Search users will still be able to verify whether an image was created by artificial intelligence.
In addition, Google is open-sourcing the Credentio library, which will allow developers to integrate a local verification mechanism into their own applications. The company announced the change following discussions surrounding Anthropic’s decision to add a watermark to texts and files generated by Claude to comply with EU regulatory requirements.
