Google has released the WeatherNext 3 AI model for high-precision weather forecasting
Google DeepMind and Google Research have unveiled a new artificial intelligence model, WeatherNext 3, designed to forecast the weather with high spatial detail and hourly data updates.
The neural network integrates real-time satellite observations, providing a picture five times more detailed than the previous version, WeatherNext 2, which was updated only once every six hours.
The model determines key surface parameters with a resolution of 5 km, other surface variables at 10 km, and atmospheric parameters at 25 km. According to estimates by the Brightband platform, WeatherNext 3 improves the accuracy of precipitation forecasts over short time horizons by up to 60% compared to NASA IMERG baseline data. In addition, the system calculates specialized parameters for renewable energy, including wind speed at an altitude of 100 meters, cloud cover, and solar radiation. The updated tool covers regions in Latin America, Africa, and the Asia-Pacific region and integrates with Google Search, Gemini, Google Maps, the Google Maps Platform Weather API, and Google Earth Engine.
