Interactive diary A Trail Tale offers a journey along the Appalachian Trail — The Verge

The A Trail Tale project offers an interactive journey along the Appalachian Trail by viewing the diary of traveler Andy Molinsky. Molinsky created the diary with the help of his brothers Adam and Alex, The Verge reports.

A journey in pixel-art format

Individual sections of the route are designed in pixel art reminiscent of Sierra’s point-and-click adventure games from the 1990s. Alex Molinsky recorded an original musical score that combines nature sounds, acoustic guitar, string instruments and, possibly, a clarinet.

The user can move sequentially between the days of the journey. Each day provides information about landmarks along the route and a game interface partly inspired by Oregon Trail.

The traveler’s condition and notes

Clicking on Andy’s character opens a menu with information about the progress of the journey, his condition and poetic excerpts. The interface also includes event markers that affect the hero’s endurance and morale indicators, including bad weather or scenic views.

As The Verge notes, A Trail Tale references Oregon Trail, but no one dies of dysentery in this project. It focuses on the visual and audio accompaniment of a journey along the Appalachian Trail.
