New labeling rules for AI-generated content have taken effect in the EU
On August 2, 2026, new transparency requirements for artificial intelligence systems took effect in the European Union, requiring developers to clearly label content generated by AI.
The new rules are designed to help people recognize when they are interacting with artificial intelligence or AI-generated content, as well as to better protect themselves from misinformation and deception.
From now on, developers must label AI-generated content using a set of icons specifically designed by the EU. In addition, users must be informed when they are communicating with an AI system rather than a human.
Severe penalties are in place for violations of these requirements. Fines for companies can reach up to €15 million or 3% of annual global revenue, and for EU institutions, bodies, and agencies—up to €750,000.
The Artificial Intelligence Act itself took effect on August 1, 2024, and its provisions are being implemented in phases.
