Waymo develops a 5-nanometer chip for robotaxis

Waymo has developed its own 5-nanometer application-specific integrated circuit (ASIC) for its sixth-generation autonomous driving system, which debuted in the Ojai robotaxi. TechCrunch reports this. The microchip is designed to process large volumes of raw data before it reaches the main “brain” of the autonomous driving system.

Processing data from sensors

According to Waymo, the chip delivers more than 1,000 TOPS, or trillions of operations per second. TechCrunch notes that by this metric, it roughly matches the level of Nvidia’s latest DRIVE AGX Thor automotive processor, designed for automated driving applications.

The Ojai robotaxi has 13 high-quality cameras. Waymo said its chip is an important component of a system that must respond quickly and safely in complex urban conditions with heavy traffic. The company also described the system as distinguished by efficiency and performance.

Reducing costs and expanding the service

Waymo previously reported that its next-generation vehicle is cheaper to manufacture, operate, and maintain. The company links these factors to the possibility of achieving profitability in the future as it expands its robotaxi service.

Waymo has opened access to Ojai robotaxis for all passengers in Los Angeles, Phoenix, and San Francisco. The company also named its computing solutions partners: AMD, Micron, Nvidia, Samsung, Sandisk, Socionext, and TSMC.
