Nearly 2,000 metric tons of CO₂ were released into the air as a result of the shelling of hypermarkets in Mykolaiv

As a result of the Russian Federation’s shelling of two hypermarkets in Mykolaiv, nearly 2,000 metric tons of carbon dioxide were released into the air, causing environmental damage totaling more than 7.3 million hryvnias (approximately 175,000 U.S. dollars).

As a result of a Russian drone attack on September 4, 2026, a fire broke out at the “EPICENTR” hypermarket, covering an area of more than 22,000 m² and lasting over 12 hours. At that time, 1,745 metric tons of pollutants were released into the atmosphere, and environmental damage amounted to over 6.6 million hryvnias (approximately 159,000 U.S. dollars).

In addition, during the night of September 8–9, following a drone strike, a fire broke out at the “METRO,” where the fire engulfed more than 3,000 m² and caused the release of 238 metric tons of pollutants, resulting in damages totaling more than 723,000 UAH (approximately 17,400 U.S. dollars).

This was reported by the State Environmental Inspection of the Southwestern District.

As a reminder, at least two people were killed in Kyiv as a result of a nighttime attack on October 7.
