The European Commissioner for Defense Named Putin as the True Root Cause of the War
European Commissioner for Defense Andrius Kubilius agreed with the Kremlin leader’s statement on the need to “eliminate the root causes” of the war against Ukraine, emphasizing that the real causes are Vladimir Putin himself and Russia’s imperial ambitions.
The official made this statement after the Russian dictator announced a similar position following a meeting with negotiators representing U.S. President Donald Trump in Moscow.
Kubilius noted that the true root causes of the aggression are Putin himself, his decision to occupy Crimea in 2014, and his decision to launch a full-scale invasion in 2022; therefore, these factors must indeed be eliminated. The American negotiators attended meetings in Moscow on September 5, after which they arrived by train in Kyiv on September 6 to continue consultations with Ukrainian leadership and representatives of European countries.

The Kremlin stated that any negotiations on ending the war in Ukraine are unacceptable unless they meet all of Moscow’s demands. Even in the event of possible territorial concessions, Moscow will not stop and will continue to insist on the fulfillment of its conditions.
Lavrov noted that Russia would only be satisfied with control of the entire Donbas and a change of power in Ukraine.
