What medical checkups should a child have before starting school?

Before the start of the school year, your child must undergo a medical examination and obtain a Form 086/o certificate.

For a routine checkup, simply contact:

  • a family doctor or pediatrician;
  • a dentist.

If necessary, the doctor may refer the child to other specialists, such as an ophthalmologist or a surgeon.

You’ll also need to have general blood, urine, and stool tests done to check for helminth eggs. Before starting first grade, a blood sugar test is also required.

The doctor checks the child’s physical development, vision, hearing, posture, and the condition of their feet, and verifies that the child has received all age-appropriate vaccinations.

If the child is simply moving up to the next grade at the same school, a repeat full medical examination is not required—an examination by a pediatrician or family doctor is sufficient.

After the examination, the doctor issues a Form 086/o certificate.

Schools in Kyiv will begin the new school year on September 1; however, in some schools that were damaged as a result of Russian attacks, classes will be held in a hybrid (in-person and remote) format due to ongoing repairs.

Education Ombudsman Nadiya Leshchyk called on local authorities to provide schools that have shelters and “Points of Resilience” with additional security guards or other security personnel.
