The Cabinet of Ministers has suspended more than a hundred agreements to sever ties with Russia and the CIS

The Cabinet of Ministers of Ukraine has terminated 116 international agreements concluded with Russia, Belarus, and within the CIS, thereby completing the process of moving away from the Soviet legal legacy.

This was announced by Foreign Minister Andriy Sibiga.

“It is my firm conviction that Ukraine’s legal and treaty framework must correspond to the realities of war and the new security architecture on the European continent. To achieve this, we must sever the last legal ties that once bound us to the Russian Federation, Belarus, and the so-called ‘CIS,’” he emphasized.

According to the minister, the government has suspended 25 treaties, denounced another 3, and withdrawn from 88 international agreements. Of the total, 5 agreements concerned Russia, 23—Belarus, 87—the CIS, and one was a trilateral agreement between Ukraine, the Russian Federation, and Belarus.

“This is a rather thorough and complex legal process that requires systematic review,” Sibiga added.

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs emphasizes that the decision is aimed at bringing Ukraine’s legal framework into line with the conditions of war and Europe’s new security architecture.

Earlier, Volodymyr Zelenskyy signed decrees withdrawing from 31 international treaties within the CIS, and 14 draft laws have been registered in the Verkhovna Rada to terminate another 74 agreements.

Overall, these steps are intended to finally complete the review of Ukraine’s international agreements with Russia, Belarus, and CIS structures in line with current security realities. The minister stressed that this process is part of a strategy to “eliminate everything that weakens Ukraine.”

Earlier, the Moldovan parliament supported the decision to withdraw from the Commonwealth of Independent States. The government believes that the organization no longer aligns with its principles and does not benefit the country. In Chisinau, officials are saying outright: this step is part of the movement toward the European Union. At the same time, the country is already considering how to minimize the potential economic consequences.
