A border crossing on the border with Moldova has been modernized in Bukovina
In the Chernivtsi region, the “Kelmentsi–Larga” international border crossing on the border with Moldova has undergone a comprehensive renovation. Outdated metal trailers have been replaced with modern modular infrastructure, the road surface has been repaved, and more suitable working conditions have been created for border guards and customs officers.
First Deputy Minister Serhiy Derkach and Chernivtsi Regional State Administration Head Ruslan Osypenko inspected the results of the modernization during a working trip to the Chernivtsi region.
According to ministry officials, border guard and customs service employees were previously forced to work in metal trailers that did not meet modern standards and did not provide comfortable working conditions.
Currently, at the border crossing:
- new modular buildings have been installed;
- the road surface and canopies have been repaired;
- a restroom area has been set up;
- an autonomous sewage system has been installed;
- a water supply system has been set up.
“The key decision during the modernization of the checkpoint was the use of modern modular infrastructure. This made it possible to significantly improve working conditions for border and customs services without lengthy capital construction projects,” the ministry noted.
Serhiy Derkach emphasized that modular infrastructure makes it possible to modernize border crossing points more quickly without having to wait years for major construction projects.
“Modular infrastructure is our approach to rapidly upgrading border crossing points. It allows us to avoid waiting years for major construction projects and instead create appropriate conditions for the public, border guards, and customs officers much more quickly, while also using funds more efficiently,” Derkach emphasized.
According to him, more than 10 border crossing points are already being modernized using this principle. In the future, the plan is to scale up this approach wherever it allows for the rapid achievement of the necessary results.
Special attention was paid to inclusivity during the modernization to ensure that the infrastructure is accessible to various user groups, including people with limited mobility.
In light of Russian attacks, ministry representatives separately discussed the safety of people working at and crossing the state border.
“Amid ongoing Russian attacks, the safety of people working at and crossing the border is a separate issue. During the visit, we discussed the need to provide the border crossing point with adequate shelter and to further evaluate existing security measures,” the Ministry of Recovery emphasized.
Based on the findings of the inspection, the relevant agencies were tasked with addressing the issue of providing adequate shelter and preparing specific proposals to strengthen the protection of people at the border crossing.

As a reminder, Russian strikes on border crossing points on the Ukrainian-Moldovan border are aimed at disrupting transport links between Ukraine and Moldova and destabilizing the region.
On the night of August 25, Russian drones attacked the “Vynohradivka–Vulcănești” international border crossing on the Ukrainian-Moldovan border. The strike damaged infrastructure and caused a fire, and operations at the checkpoint were temporarily suspended.
