At Vernadsky Station, the penguins "tasted" a Ukrainian biologist

At the Akademik Vernadsky Antarctic Station, penguins took an interest in Ukrainian biologist Zoya Shvidka and began “tasting” her brightly colored jumpsuit.

This was reported by the National Antarctic Scientific Center.

While working, the scientist crouched down to photograph the birds, after which two penguins approached her and began pecking at her clothes and touching her with their wings.

According to Shvidka, penguins had often approached her before, but such active interaction had not yet occurred.

Scientists explain that this behavior is linked to the color of her clothing: penguins associate orange hues with food, as this is the color of the beaks of adult birds from which chicks receive food.

Experts emphasize that in such situations, it is important to remain calm and avoid sudden movements so as not to scare the animals.

Earlier, Ukrainian polar explorers from the Antarctic station “Akademik Vernadsky” described how they cope with snowdrifts. Participants in the 29th expedition, armed with shovels, regularly clear areas around the station where snowdrifts have reached heights of up to 180 centimeters in some places.

Additionally, Ukrainian polar explorers observed a lunar halo and pearlescent clouds in the sky above “Vernadsky” in Antarctica.
