Categories of Ukrainians Who May Be Deported from the EU First Have Been Identified
Although temporary protection for Ukrainians in the European Union has been extended through March 2028, certain categories of people may face forced removal.
Three categories of people are particularly at risk.
The first are those who entered the Schengen Area illegally, bypassing official border crossings.
The second category consists of people who have committed a criminal offense or pose a threat to public order.
The third category consists of individuals who entered the EU using forged documents or who knowingly provided false personal information.
Forced removal does not necessarily mean return to Ukraine.
The offender may be sent to a third country if there are legal grounds for doing so. In addition, the person may be barred from entering EU countries for a certain period.
Information about such a person may be entered into the Schengen Information System (SIS).
Overall, temporary protection for Ukrainians in the EU has been extended until March 2028.
As of the end of May 2026, more than 4.3 million people who had fled Ukraine due to the full-scale war were benefiting from this status in EU countries.
At the same time, the extension of temporary protection does not waive the requirement to comply with the laws of the host countries. Violations of immigration rules or the commission of serious offenses may result in consequences regardless of whether the individual has temporary protection status.

Recently, Polish authorities decided to deport a Ukrainian citizen who, while intoxicated, bit a police officer. Due to the injuries sustained, the officer was forced to seek treatment at an infectious diseases hospital.
A Ukrainian citizen was deported from Poland following an incident at the Centrum station on the Warsaw Metro. The man threw a backpack onto the tracks and fled, causing the evacuation of several hundred passengers and disruptions to train service.
