The NBU will issue a commemorative coin in honor of those who died in Russian captivity
The National Bank of Ukraine is putting into circulation a new commemorative 10-hryvnia coin titled “In Memory of Those Executed, Tortured, or Who Died in Captivity.” It is dedicated to honoring the defenders of Ukraine—both men and women—as well as volunteers and civilians who fell victim to Russian captivity.
The coin’s release coincides with the Day of Remembrance for Ukrainians Who Died in Captivity. The design of the new commemorative coin symbolizes respect and remembrance for those who endured torture or were executed while held captive.
The NBU Unveiled the New Commemorative Coin
According to Andriy Pyshnyy, Governor of the National Bank of Ukraine, the new coin is a symbol of remembrance that knows no statute of limitations.
“This coin is about a memory that does not fade with time. It honors the military personnel and civilians whose lives were cut short by Russian captivity and serves as a reminder of the crimes committed against the Ukrainian people. We cannot bring back the fallen, but we can and must do everything to ensure that the truth and the memory of them remain with us forever,” he said.
Symbolic Design
The face value of the commemorative circulation coin is 10 hryvnias.
The obverse completely replicates the design of the 2018 10-hryvnia circulation coin.
The reverse, however, features a broken chain, symbolizing liberation from shackles. Its links merge into the silhouettes of birds, representing indomitable spirit, heroism, and the eternal memory of those who gave their lives for Ukraine.
An inscription runs around the edge of the coin: “IN MEMORY OF THOSE EXECUTED, TORTURED, OR KILLED IN CAPTIVITY.”
The reverse design was created by Mykola Kovalenko. The obverse and the coin’s sculptural design were created by Volodymyr Demyanenko.
The National Bank reported that the new commemorative coins will gradually enter circulation. The total mintage will be 2 million coins.
The coin will circulate alongside regular 10-hryvnia coins while also fulfilling an important mission to preserve the memory of Ukrainians who fell victim to Russian captivity.

The National Bank of Ukraine is preparing to put a new high-denomination banknote—2,000 hryvnias—into circulation. It will be available to the public starting September 4, 2026.
