The UN Security Council will convene a meeting in response to Russia's latest shelling of Ukraine
At Ukraine’s request, the UN Security Council will convene on July 9 in response to the latest massive attacks by the Russian Federation on Kyiv and other Ukrainian cities. The meeting will begin at 10:00 a.m. local time (5:00 p.m. Kyiv time). This was announced by Andriy Melnyk, Ukraine’s Permanent Representative to the UN.
The Ukrainian side emphasized that it expects its allies on the Security Council to take action, rather than merely condemning the aggressor’s actions or issuing yet another statement of concern. The diplomat called for the adoption of the toughest possible measures against Russia and for ensuring its complete isolation within the United Nations.
Melnik stressed that the Russian delegation to the UN should be treated as representatives of a pariah state and that all “business as usual” contacts should cease. He also added that Ukraine’s allies should push for a similar principled approach to isolating Russia from the countries of the Global South as well.
This was reported by Ukrinform.
Ukraine requested an emergency meeting of the UN Security Council following the second massive shelling by Russia in just a few days. Foreign Minister Andriy Sibiga called on the Democratic Republic of the Congo, which currently holds the Council presidency, as well as the permanent members of the Security Council, to support this request.
