Sibiga thanked four EU countries for their support regarding Russian assets
Ukrainian Foreign Minister Andriy Sibiga expressed his gratitude to the foreign ministers of Sweden, Poland, the Netherlands, and Spain for their joint initiative. This refers to a letter to the European Commission calling for the use of frozen Russian assets to benefit Ukraine.
According to the minister, Russia refuses to end the war and, on the contrary, is intensifying its terror. Ukraine, meanwhile, needs to cover the deficit caused by rising defense spending and reconstruction costs.
“Using Russian assets—and not just European taxpayers’ money—to cover the additional costs of defending Ukraine and the rest of Europe from the Russian threat is fair and logical. This discussion should be rational, not emotional,” Sibiga noted.
He expressed confidence that, through professional discussion and analysis, experts will be able to develop realistic solutions that comply with European standards, international law, and the principle of the rule of law, and that risks can be collectively minimized and distributed evenly, without placing an unfair burden on individual member states.
“I look forward to our discussions with our EU colleagues next week to explore ways forward,” Sibiga added.
