A man from Bukovina who killed his 11-month-old daughter in a drunk-driving accident will stand trial

In the village of Mamayivtsi in the Chernivtsi region, law enforcement officials notified a 42-year-old man that he was a suspect in a fatal traffic accident caused by his actions.

According to the investigation, the driver was behind the wheel of a Citroën while severely intoxicated—a test recorded 1.52 per mille of alcohol in his system, which is more than seven times the legal limit.

The accident occurred on July 7, when the driver crossed a solid line, veered into oncoming traffic, and collided with another passenger car. Inside the Citroën were the driver’s 22-year-old common-law wife and their 11-month-old daughter. Both passengers sustained serious injuries and were rushed to the hospital. On the morning of July 8, the child died at the Chernivtsi Emergency Medical Care Hospital.

Under the procedural guidance of prosecutors, the man was charged under Part 3 of Article 286-1 of the Criminal Code of Ukraine, which provides for a sentence of up to 10 years in prison. The suspect is currently being held in a temporary detention facility, and the prosecution is arguing in court that he must remain in custody without exception.
