Ukraine and G7 ministers will discuss the restoration of the Chernobyl Nuclear Power Plant's protective shelter

On March 26–27, a meeting of G7 foreign ministers will take place in France, during which they plan to discuss the restoration of the protective arch over the Chernobyl Nuclear Power Plant, which was damaged by Russia. Ukrainian Foreign Minister Andriy Sibiga will take part in the discussion.

This was reported by a French diplomatic source.

According to the French diplomatic source, the working session on March 26 will be dedicated to the reconstruction of the facility, which was damaged by a Russian drone attack in 2025. This protective structure is critically important for safety, and the 40th anniversary of the Chernobyl accident is approaching.

EBRD President Odile Renaud-Basso has also been invited to participate in the session, as the bank plays a key role in financing the reconstruction of the arch. The French diplomat noted that the cost of the work could amount to at least several hundred million euros, and opportunities for securing funding will be discussed.

The G7 foreign ministers’ meeting will conclude on March 27 in the municipality of Cerne-la-Ville. In addition to the issue of the Chernobyl Nuclear Power Plant, U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio plans to discuss common security challenges and avenues for international cooperation.

Earlier, Chernobyl NPP Director General Serhiy Tarakanov announced the start of construction of a 2-megawatt solar power plant on the plant’s grounds, emphasizing the project’s strategic importance for the facility’s stable operation.
