Ukraine may introduce a points-based penalty system for drivers

Ukraine plans to introduce a point-based penalty system for drivers as early as this year, which would result in the revocation of a driver’s license upon accumulation of a certain number of violations.

This was announced by MP Volodymyr Kreidenko on the Rada TV channel.

According to the MP, the current system of fines is not effective enough, as drivers can repeatedly violate traffic rules simply by paying fines.

“If we introduce this system, drivers will receive a certain number of points for each traffic violation. If, for example, they accumulate up to 15 points for various types of violations over the course of a year, their driver’s license will be revoked. They will have to retake the exams, learn to drive courteously and correctly in accordance with the requirements, and only then will they be able to get their license back,” Kreidenko explained.

The deputy noted that a similar system has already proven effective in a number of countries, including Germany, France, the United States, and Poland.

According to him, implementing such a model helps improve driver discipline and reduce the number of systematic violations.

Kraydenko expressed hope that the relevant bill will be adopted this year, after which the penalty point system could be implemented in Ukraine.
