The number of water-related tragedies is on the rise in Ukraine

Five people died in Ukraine’s bodies of water in just one day. The tragic incidents occurred in the Vinnytsia, Dnipropetrovsk, and Odesa regions, as well as in Kyiv. The State Emergency Service emphasizes that the numbers continue to rise. Since the beginning of July, the water has claimed 63 lives, and 400 since the start of the year; children are among the victims.

Over the past day, several tragic incidents occurred simultaneously on bodies of water in various regions of Ukraine. According to the State Emergency Service, the water claimed the lives of five people. In Vinnytsia Oblast, a tragedy occurred in the village of Mohylivka. There, State Emergency Service divers recovered the body of a 17-year-old boy from a local pond.

Two fatalities were reported in Dnipropetrovsk Oblast. In the village of Ust-Kamianka, rescuers recovered the body of a deceased man from the Kamianka River. Another drowning victim was found in the Sukha Sura River in the village of Trudolyubivka. In Odesa, a 35-year-old man fell victim to the elements. Local residents pulled him from the sea, but were unable to save his life.

Another incident occurred in the capital. On Lake Zhanderka, municipal divers found the body of a 64-year-old man. At the same time, the State Emergency Service reported that there could have been many more tragedies. In the city of Ternivka, Dnipropetrovsk Oblast, rescuers came to the aid of a man who was drowning in the Samara River just in time. He was successfully rescued.

Another fortunate incident occurred in the Chernihiv region. In the town of Oster, concerned bystanders pulled a 15-year-old child from the Desna River before rescuers arrived. The State Emergency Service notes that the situation at bodies of water remains very alarming. Since the beginning of July alone, 63 people have drowned in Ukraine, including three children. Since the start of 2026, water has already claimed the lives of 400 people. Among the deceased are 53 children.

Rescuers are once again urging Ukrainians to exercise the utmost caution near bodies of water. Do not swim in unsupervised areas, enter the water while intoxicated, leave children unattended, or overestimate your abilities while swimming. The State Emergency Service emphasizes that most of these tragedies could have been avoided if people had followed basic water safety rules. This was reported by the State Emergency Service of Ukraine.

A mass fish kill was discovered in the Khadzhibey Estuary in the Odesa region. The die-off was recorded on July 13 near the village of Male, Dachne Village Council, and the village of Berehove, Usativ Village Council, in the Odesa district. To determine the exact causes, experts collected water samples and sent them for laboratory analysis.
