The killer of a Ukrainian officer in Odesa believed he was carrying out a mission for the SBU
An 82-year-old resident of Dnipro, who was detained in Odesa after shooting and killing a 50-year-old first-rank captain of the Ukrainian Navy on September 30, claimed that he was acting on orders from the Security Service of Ukraine.
The assailant staged a traffic accident on Lyustdorfskaya Road, after which he fired two shots at the officer. The suspect was arrested at the scene. According to investigators, this was yet another attempt at a contract killing of a military officer. Law enforcement officials had previously thwarted an assassination attempt on the same officer, whom a recruited repeat offender—acting on instructions from Russian special services—had planned to shoot with an automatic rifle.
The suspect has already been officially charged under two counts: intentional murder (Article 115 of the Criminal Code of Ukraine) and illegal possession of a weapon (Article 263 of the Criminal Code of Ukraine).
