Easter in 2027: When to Celebrate and How the Date Is Determined

Easter does not have a fixed date, as it falls on a different day each year. In 2027, Orthodox Christians, including the Orthodox Church of Ukraine, will celebrate the Resurrection of Christ on May 2.

The date of the holiday is determined using a special method known as the “computus.” It takes into account the cycles of both the lunar and solar calendars.

The Resurrection of Christ is one of the so-called movable feasts, so its date is determined separately each year.

The calculation is based on the relationship between the spring equinox and the phases of the moon. This is why Easter can fall on different calendar days in different years.

The Orthodox Church of Ukraine has previously explained that the general rule for determining the date of the holiday was established long ago.

“The First Ecumenical Council in 325 decreed that all Christians should celebrate Easter on the first Sunday after the first full moon following the spring equinox (roughly March 21 — Ed.),” the OCU’s press service stated.

The OCU noted that initially this date was intended to be common to all Christians, since the Church was one, and it was to this formula that the ancient Paschal Table—the method for calculating the date of Easter—was tied.

At the same time, as early as the second century A.D., disputes began to arise among Christians regarding the exact date of the Easter celebration.

After the schism in Christianity, these differences intensified due to the use of different calendar systems. As explained by the OCU, this led to a discrepancy in determining the day of the spring equinox due to a 13-day difference between the calendars.

Due to different Paschal tables, the dates of Easter for Orthodox Christians and Catholics do not coincide in many years.

The Orthodox Church of Ukraine switched to the New Julian calendar in 2023.

In 2027, Great Lent will begin on March 15. It will last until May 1, Holy Saturday.

After the end of Lent, Christians will celebrate the main feast of the church year.

Easter, or the Glorious Resurrection of Christ, falls on Sunday, May 2, in 2027.
