Zelenskyy and Merz discussed strengthening air defense and Germany's contributions to the PURL program

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy met with German Federal Chancellor Friedrich Merz in Evian, where the G7 summit is taking place.

The parties focused on strengthening Ukraine’s air defense, supplying additional air defense systems and missiles for them, and discussed the situation on the battlefield and the results of Ukraine’s long-range operations.

According to participants in the meeting, the leaders also exchanged views on steps that could weaken Russia’s ability to continue the war and force it to move toward negotiations.

During the meeting, they discussed further strengthening Ukraine’s air defense systems, the supply of missiles and air defense equipment, the military situation on the front lines, and the results of Ukrainian long-range strikes on Russian targets.

The parties paid special attention to defense initiatives: the development of the Drone Deal project, additional German contributions to the PURL program, and cooperation between Ukrainian and German companies in the production of anti-ballistic defense systems.

The leaders also emphasized the importance of implementing the agreements reached during the G7-Ukraine meetings.

Particular attention was given to implementing what was agreed upon during today’s G7-Ukraine meeting.

The meeting between Zelenskyy and Merz confirmed the further strengthening of defense cooperation between Ukraine and Germany, particularly in the areas of air defense, arms supplies, and the development of joint defense projects.

This was reported by the Office of the President.

As a reminder, on Wednesday, May 6, Norway announced it would provide Ukraine with 2.8 billion Norwegian kroner (over $300 million) as part of NATO’s Prioritized Ukraine Requirements List (PURL) initiative for the procurement of U.S. weapons.

Earlier, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy announced an expansion of international support under the Prioritized Ukraine Requirements List (PURL) initiative. During the European Union summit in Cyprus, three countries joined the program, though their names have not been disclosed.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy also held a meeting with NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte, during which the parties discussed the implementation of the PURL program and further efforts to secure support from partners.
