Zelenskyy Set the Main Task for Khmara at the Ministry of Defense

Following Yevhen Khmara’s appointment as acting Minister of Defense, President Volodymyr Zelenskyy outlined his main task. According to the head of state, the key focus of his work will be overseeing the long-range operations of the Ukrainian Security Forces.

Khmara will also be responsible for internal oversight within the Defense Forces. Zelenskyy emphasized that the new leader has sufficient experience to effectively carry out these tasks.

President Volodymyr Zelenskyy announced that the top priority for Acting Minister of Defense Yevhen Khmara will be overseeing the long-range operations of Ukraine’s Security Forces. According to the president, Khmara has significant combat experience. Prior to his new appointment, he headed the “Alpha” Special Operations Center of the Security Service of Ukraine. “He led the SBU’s ‘Alpha’ Special Operations Center, which has been the most effective in eliminating occupiers on the front lines. It is ‘Alpha’ that consistently ranks number one in the monthly results. Khmara was responsible for the long-range operations of the Security Service of Ukraine,” Zelenskyy said.

The president noted that he had already discussed further work in this area with Khmara. “We agreed that Khmara will oversee the Security Forces’ long-range operations—this is a priority,” the head of state emphasized.

In addition, according to Zelenskyy, the acting Minister of Defense will also be responsible for the internal situation within the Defense Forces. The president believes that Khmara’s professional experience will help ensure proper oversight. “He knows exactly what Ukraine needs and can also oversee the internal situation within the components of the Defense Forces: he has sufficient security experience to prevent situations that would be a source of shame,” Zelenskyy stated.

Thus, the new head of the Ministry of Defense’s main tasks will include developing and coordinating long-range operations, as well as overseeing the work of the Ukrainian Defense Forces’ units.

Ivan Vyhovskyi was dismissed from his post as head of the National Police of Ukraine on July 16. Until a new head is appointed, First Deputy Maksym Tsutsikiridze will serve as acting head.
