Zelenskyy said he is ready to hold elections once several issues have been resolved
Volodymyr Zelenskyy stated on September 16 that he is ready to hold elections as early as tomorrow. At the same time, he said, the Constitution, election laws, and the security situation do not allow for them to be held during wartime.
“I’m ready to hold them as early as tomorrow, but if the war continues, you can’t do that—neither in accordance with the Constitution, nor with election laws, nor, first and foremost, given the security situation. How are people supposed to vote when children can’t go to school? How can we hold elections when 9 million people are abroad? Usually, about half a million people vote from abroad. And what about the people living in the temporarily occupied territories? Will they vote? How will they vote, and who will oversee the voting process there? There are Russian soldiers there,” said the head of state.
According to Zelenskyy, those who are currently advocating for elections in the country want to be in politics.
“I think this is a mistake. During a war, peace is the number-one priority. Politics isn’t even number two. Even for politicians, it ranks tenth. And for the people—it’s in the hundredth position. People have other priorities: how to survive, how to live, how to go to school… what should we do about all this?” the President noted in an interview with the American television network CBS News.
As a reminder, the Verkhovna Rada has toughened penalties for fraud committed through call centers.
At the same time, the Rada rejected a bill to increase penalties for fatal traffic accidents.
In addition, the Rada allowed internally displaced persons from the temporarily occupied territories to purchase housing using vouchers and loans.
