Estonian Foreign Ministry secretary general Vseviov urges use of frozen Russian assets for Ukraine
In Estonia, Foreign Ministry Secretary General Jonatan Vseviov stated that the frozen assets of the Russian Federation — an aggressor state — should be used for the benefit of Ukraine. He named the introduction of international measures that would have irreversible consequences for Russia as one of Estonia’s main diplomatic goals, ERR News reports.
Decisions beyond electoral cycles
According to Vseviov, not all of Estonia’s allies are currently convinced of the need for such steps, but the country’s Foreign Ministry does not consider its efforts unsuccessful. He noted that Western countries have political forces that, during election campaigns, promise to change the current policy toward Russia and Ukraine and abandon support for Kyiv.
Against this backdrop, the West, in the official’s assessment, must make decisions that will not depend on electoral cycles or the composition of parliaments or governments. He named legal procedures as one such area.

Responsibility for aggression
Vseviov also stressed the importance of supporting the work of the International Criminal Court, which issued an arrest warrant for Vladimir Putin in connection with war crimes. At the same time, the ICC does not have jurisdiction over the crime of aggression, so a separate mechanism must be created to consider this issue, the Estonian Foreign Ministry secretary general said.
Estonia seeks to ensure that accountability for the organizers of aggression and war crimes is maintained regardless of possible political arrangements in the future, Vseviov said. He called the use of frozen Russian assets to support Ukraine one of the most important principled decisions sought by Estonian diplomacy.
