The ISW has documented setbacks for the Russian military on several fronts
On September 4–5, Russian forces launched attacks on several sections of the front simultaneously but did not achieve any confirmed successes. At the same time, Russian sources reported counterattacks by the Ukrainian Armed Forces in the Kharkiv region and a possible advance by Ukrainian troops near Sumy; however, this information requires confirmation.
Russian forces continue offensive operations on various sectors of the front, but have not been able to make any confirmed advances over the past 24 hours. Analysts note that on September 4–5, Russian forces carried out attacks in the north of the Sumy region. However, no confirmed advances by the Russian army were recorded there.
However, one Russian source linked to the Russian Federation’s Northern Military District reported that Ukrainian forces were advancing along the railroad between Taratutyn and Ryasne, southeast of Sumy. The ISW does not present this as a definitively confirmed fact. This is specifically a report from a Russian source that requires further verification.
The Russians also failed to make headway in the Kharkiv region
Russian troops also launched attacks in the north of the Kharkiv region, as well as in the Velykyi Burluk area. However, the occupiers were unable to achieve any confirmed advances there either. At the same time, one Russian source reported that Ukrainian forces are conducting counterattacks and attempting to retake previously lost positions near Hoptivka and Kudiivka.
These reports should also be taken with a grain of salt, as Russian military bloggers often publish information about the situation on the front lines without sufficient evidence. In particular, some Russian military bloggers claimed, without evidence, that Ukrainian forces had been surrounded between the Vovchansk and Velykoburlutsk directions. At this time, the ISW does not confirm this information.
No breakthroughs in the Kupiansk and Sloviansk sectors
In the Kupiansk sector, the Russian army also continued offensive operations on September 4–5. Despite the attacks, the occupiers made no confirmed territorial gains. The situation was similar in the Sloviansk sector. Russian forces attempted to attack Ukrainian positions, but no confirmed advances were recorded during this period.
In other parts of the Donbas, Russian forces also conducted limited offensive operations. However, there were no confirmed advances by the Russian army there on September 4–5 either. Thus, Russian troops continued to put pressure on Ukrainian positions on several fronts simultaneously, but this did not result in any confirmed territorial gains.
Ukraine Strikes at Russian Logistics
While Russian troops are attempting to advance on the front lines, the Ukrainian military continues to strike Russian military targets in the rear. According to the ISW, Ukrainian forces carried out medium-range strikes against Russian military facilities in occupied Donetsk Oblast. Separately, the Ukrainian military attacked Russian logistics in the occupied territory of Zaporizhzhia Oblast.
This is a crucial part of the fighting, as logistics supplies Russian units with ammunition, fuel, equipment, and other essential resources. Strikes on such targets can complicate the resupply of Russian troops directly on the front lines.
No confirmed advances were reported in the Huliaipole sector either
Another area where the Russian army attempted to attack was the Huliaipole sector. On September 4–5, Russian troops conducted offensive operations there. However, according to the ISW’s assessment, there was no confirmed advance by the occupiers. At the same time, Ukrainian forces continued to strike at Russian logistics in the occupied part of the Zaporizhzhia region.
Thus, on September 4–5, the Russian army attempted to attack on several fronts simultaneously—from the Sumy and Kharkiv regions to the Kupiansk, Sloviansk, Donetsk, and Huliaipole sectors. However, the ISW did not record any confirmed advances by Russian troops in these areas.
At the same time, reports emerged of Ukrainian military operations, including counterattacks in the Kharkiv region and a possible advance near Sumy. However, some of this information comes from Russian sources and therefore requires further confirmation. This is stated in the Institute for the Study of War (ISW) report dated September 5.
Russian forces struck a residential building in Kherson with a guided aerial bomb. Three people were injured in the attack—an 84-year-old man, a 75-year-old woman, and a 43-year-old man. All were taken to the hospital.
Russian drones caused major fires in the Synelnykivskyi district of Dnipropetrovsk Oblast. A food warehouse and a logistics company building caught fire, and rescue workers had to work on site all night. The fire was successfully extinguished.
Over the past 24 hours, Russian troops engaged in combat with the Ukrainian Defense Forces 245 times. The highest number of attacks was recorded in the Pokrovsk direction—43; another 17 assaults took place in the Kostiantynivsk direction, and nine each in the Pivdenno-Slobozhansky and Kupiansky directions.
Over the past day, the Russian army lost another 1,390 soldiers in the war against Ukraine. The Ukrainian General Staff also reports the destruction of three multiple-launch rocket systems, one air defense system, and over 1,400 drones.
