The mayor of Moscow acknowledged that drones had struck the Gazpromneft oil refinery in Kapotnya

On the night of June 15, 2026, the Russian capital and several regions of the Russian Federation came under one of the largest airstrikes since the beginning of the year, resulting in a fire at a strategic oil refinery.

Moscow Mayor Sergei Sobyanin officially acknowledged that enemy unmanned aerial vehicles successfully struck the Gazpromneft oil refinery located in the Kapotnya district.

According to the Russian Ministry of Defense, a total of 172 Ukrainian UAVs were allegedly destroyed overnight in the skies over Russia and the annexed Crimea, 60 of which, according to the mayor of the capital, were heading directly for Moscow.

Despite the occupiers’ reports of effective air defense operations, the consequences of the strikes on the oil infrastructure proved critical.

A Russian official assured that there were no casualties as a result of the incident, but Ukrainian monitoring channels recorded serious damage to the primary oil refining facility.

This facility in Kapotna is one of the country’s largest oil refineries, with a processing capacity of 11 million tons of oil per year.

The plant supplies 40% of all fuel in Moscow and about 70% of gasoline and jet fuel in the Moscow region, so its shutdown threatens to cause a major crisis.

Due to the massive fire and safety risks, local authorities were forced to implement strict emergency measures in the city.

According to the company "Mostransavto," traffic in Kapotnya was completely blocked, and operations at all four of the capital’s main airports were temporarily suspended.

Military expert Yan Matveev noted that this time Moscow was attacked by both the well-known long-range "Lyuty" drones and new Ukrainian UAVs modeled after the Iranian "Shaheds."

It is worth recalling that this refinery in Kapotnya had already come under attack by the Ukrainian Armed Forces in mid-May, after which the plant completely halted operations for a time.

According to Kovalenko, the ELOU AVT-6—a primary oil refining unit on which the plant’s operational capacity depends—is on fire at the Moscow refinery.

As a reminder, Russia attacked the Kyiv-Pechersk Lavra, causing a fire.

Prior to that, Russian KABs struck the Zaporizhzhia region, resulting in injuries.

Five State Emergency Service rescuers were killed as a result of the Russian attack on Kharkiv.
