Authorities in Kursk have reported that more than 500 civilians have been killed as a result of the fighting in the region

Alexander Khinshtein, governor of Russia’s Kursk Oblast, reported that 507 civilians have been killed as a result of hostilities in the region. He announced these figures during the St. Petersburg International Economic Forum.

According to the Russian official, the loss of life has been the most devastating consequence of the events unfolding in the border region.

“Human lives, unfortunately, cannot be brought back; this is the most tragic consequence of the events. According to the latest data, 507 civilians have been killed in the Kursk region,” Khinshtein stated.

The figure cited is one of the highest estimates of civilian casualties in Russia’s border regions officially acknowledged by the Russian authorities since the start of active hostilities on Russian territory.

At the same time, the Ukrainian side has repeatedly emphasized that the Ukrainian Armed Forces are striking exclusively at military facilities, logistics hubs, ammunition depots, and other infrastructure used by Russia to wage war against Ukraine.

In recent months, the Kursk region has regularly found itself at the center of combat operations due to its proximity to the Ukrainian border. Drone attacks, shelling of military facilities, and the activation of air defense systems have been repeatedly recorded in the region.

Russian authorities continue to report on the consequences of hostilities in border regions, while Ukraine emphasizes the legality of strikes against military targets on the territory of the aggressor state.

The governor made these remarks during the St. Petersburg International Economic Forum (SPIEF).

As a reminder, on May 18, the Ukrainian Armed Forces struck a Russian command and observation post near Tyotkino in the Kursk region of the Russian Federation, as well as a number of other enemy targets in the Kherson, Sumy, Dnipropetrovsk, and Donetsk regions.

Prior to this, Russian units in the Kursk direction made another attempt to break through to the rear of Ukrainian positions, using a gas pipeline and high-speed light vehicles. Thanks to the coordinated actions of intelligence and paratroopers from the 71st Separate Jaeger Brigade of the Airborne Forces, the enemy attack was completely repelled while still in the deployment phase.
