Ukraine's Permanent Representative to the UN issued a warning to the Kremlin regarding the negotiations

Ukraine's Permanent Representative to the UN issued a warning to the Kremlin regarding the negotiations

Ukraine is ready for direct negotiations with Russia to achieve a just and lasting peace, but there are limits to how far Kyiv is willing to compromise, said Ukraine’s Permanent Representative to the UN.

Andriy Melnyk, Ukraine’s Permanent Representative to the UN, made this statement during a meeting of the UN Security Council.

The diplomat emphasized that Kyiv continues to support the idea of a ceasefire along the line of contact and remains open to the negotiation process. At the same time, Ukraine may reconsider its own proposals if international efforts continue to yield no results.

Melnik stated that the situation on the front lines has changed over the past month, and Russia itself is increasingly feeling the consequences of the war. According to him, Russian infrastructure—which supports the functioning of the Kremlin’s war machine—has also suffered serious losses.

“Recent days have shown that even the air defense shield built around Moscow and reinforced with systems brought in from all over Russia is unable to protect its military targets. And this is just the beginning,” the diplomat said.

The Permanent Representative recalled that over the past 15 months, Ukraine has repeatedly called on the UN Security Council to support a resolution on a complete and unconditional ceasefire. “Unfortunately, Ukraine’s outstretched hand has remained hanging in the air,” Melnik said.

He emphasized that Ukraine is ready for direct negotiations with Moscow to achieve peace in accordance with the UN Charter. At the same time, the diplomat warned that Kyiv’s patience has its limits.

“I cannot rule out that Ukraine may recalibrate and modify its proposal. A ceasefire along the de facto front line is already a major compromise,” he stressed.

Separately, Melnik appealed to Russia’s representative on the UN Security Council, calling for the withdrawal of troops from Ukraine’s occupied territories. According to him, Moscow will not be able to hold onto the seized territories indefinitely, so Russian troops should leave Ukrainian territory while they still have the opportunity to do so.
