The British Air Force has shot down a drone used by Russia to attack Ukraine for the first time

During the Russian attack on the Odesa region on April 25, Russian drones flew along the border with Romania. British aircraft patrolling Romanian airspace tracked their routes. Later, drone debris was found in border areas of Romania.

This was reported by the Romanian Ministry of Defense.

Romanian radars detected drones moving near the country’s airspace. To intercept them, two Eurofighter Typhoon fighter jets from the British Royal Air Force, which are on a patrol mission, were scrambled from the Fetești airbase.

The aircraft established radar contact with the target 1.5 kilometers from the city of Reni in Ukraine. The pilots received authorization to engage one of the drones, but the Ministry of Defense’s press release did not mention a direct hit.

The Independent, citing sources in the UK Ministry of Defense, reports that the Eurofighter Typhoons did not enter Ukrainian airspace and did not engage with any Russian targets.

Additionally, ground-based radars of the Romanian Ministry of Defense tracked a group of targets heading toward the city of Reni, where numerous explosions were later recorded.

Amid the attack, residents of the city of Galați, near the border with Ukraine, reported at 2:31 a.m. that an object had fallen in the Bariera Traian area. Specialized units from emergency services and other Ministry of Internal Affairs agencies were dispatched to the scene.

According to preliminary assessments, a utility shed and a power pole were damaged. Debris from the drone was found in several locations. However, there were no casualties.

It later emerged that the drone that crashed in Halats had an explosive payload. People were evacuated from the surrounding area, and as a precautionary measure, gas supply was cut off on 20 streets, Digi24 reports.

As a reminder, during Russia’s massive nighttime attack on April 25, Ukrainian air defenses managed to destroy over 90% of aerial targets, including drones and missiles.
