What is known about the Russian woman who killed the traitor Shagiev

Margarita Reutt, a Russian woman whom the Russian Federation accuses of organizing the bombing and killing of the military defector Robert Shagayev in occupied Sevastopol, was previously described as an ordinary woman who traveled extensively and led an active life.

Journalists from The Guardian investigated her background and found that after the start of the full-scale invasion, her attitude toward Russia gradually changed. In 2025, Reutt was fined for “discrediting the army,” and subsequently began traveling frequently to occupied Crimea.

At the same time, it is not known for certain whether she was linked to Ukrainian intelligence or was actually involved in Shageev’s assassination. The Russian side claims she has confessed, but it is impossible to independently verify these claims.

In Sevastopol, which is temporarily occupied by Russia, the aggressor state, 32-year-old Sochi resident Margarita Roit was detained in connection with an explosion which killed Robert Shageev, deputy commander of the Russian Black Sea Fleet’s submarine brigade, on August 13. The explosive device, equivalent to approximately 500 grams of TNT, was hidden in a trash can in a square in a residential area of the city.

In the temporarily occupied city of Sevastopol, Robert Shageev, the former commander of Ukraine’s only submarine, the “Zaporizhzhia,” was killed in the explosion.
