British volunteer Ayrton Redfern was killed in the fighting for Ukraine
A 23-year-old British citizen, Ayrton Redfern, was killed on May 9 in the Donetsk region while fighting on Ukraine’s side against Russian occupation forces. The British man served in a special forces unit and took part in combat operations in eastern Ukraine.
The BBC reported this, citing his mother.
His mother said: “It is with deep sorrow that I announce that my wonderful, strong, and incredibly brave son has died.”
The British Foreign Office stated that it is supporting the family of the fallen soldier and is in contact with Ukrainian authorities. Ayrton Redfern’s mother noted that she “lived in fear that the police would come to her door with bad news.”
“That fear became a reality on the evening of May 11, and that’s when my world and that of my 10-year-old son, Ayrton, fell apart,” the mother of the deceased said.
She highlighted her son’s strength, bravery, and courage.
“We are trying to have at least 1% of Airton’s strength, bravery, and courage, and if we succeed, it will help us eventually come to terms with life without him. I am very grateful for all the words of support, messages, and condolences from those who knew Airton and from strangers,” Airton’s mother said.
She also mentioned that her son was set to receive an award for bravery in a few days for saving a life.
As a reminder, a British volunteer hopes to obtain Ukrainian citizenship after being wounded on the front lines.
