Three Ukrainians who were fighting for Russia were taken prisoner in Chasovoy Yar
Soldiers from the 24th Separate Mechanized Brigade captured three Ukrainians in Chasovoy Yar who had been fighting on Russia’s side. According to the brigade, they arrived from the temporarily occupied Crimea and the left bank of the Kherson region. Their fate will now be determined by the Ukrainian justice system, provided the investigation establishes that a crime was committed.

The brigade posted a series of photos of the captives on its social media accounts. According to military officials, these men are from temporarily occupied Ukrainian territories. Two of them came from the temporarily occupied Crimea and the left bank of the Kherson region.
The 24th Brigade noted that the stories of Russian soldiers after being taken prisoner are often similar. They say they signed up for the money or because their commanders promised them service far from the front lines. This time, according to the military, similar explanations have come from Ukrainians who decided to join the Russian army. “They didn’t want to fight for their own country, so they went to fight for someone else’s,” commented a representative of the 24th Brigade.
What will happen to the prisoners
The brigade emphasized that the future fate of these men may differ from that of ordinary Russian prisoners of war. The reason is that they are citizens of Ukraine. If the Ukrainian investigation determines that they voluntarily joined the Russian army and participated in the war against Ukraine, their actions may be subject to a separate legal assessment.
Specifically, this could involve possible treason or other crimes against Ukraine. At the same time, only a court can make a final decision regarding a person’s guilt. The mere fact of serving in the Russian army does not automatically imply guilt under a specific charge—law enforcement agencies must establish all the circumstances and the role of each prisoner. The 24th Brigade noted that treason can carry a sentence of up to 15 years in prison.
Why Did Ukrainians Choose to Serve Russia?
Separately, military officials plan to explain the circumstances under which the three men ended up in the Russian army. The 24th Mechanized Brigade promised to provide more details in a separate video. It is currently known that the prisoners come from areas of Ukraine under Russian occupation. It was precisely after the occupation of Crimea and parts of the Kherson region that Russia began actively recruiting local residents into its military units.
In this case, Ukrainian military officials emphasize that the three men ultimately ended up on the front lines fighting against the Ukrainian army. Now investigators must assess their actions.
