Russia Wants to Censor All Social Media Posts

Russia Wants to Censor All Social Media Posts

A proposal has been made in the State Duma of the Russian Federation to introduce mandatory pre-publication screening of all social media posts. The corresponding initiative has been submitted to Roskomnadzor.

Under the proposal, social media platforms would be required to review and approve all user-generated content before it is published. Officials cite the need to protect children from harmful information as the rationale for this measure.

The Center for Countering Disinformation believes that in this way, the Russian authorities are seeking to tighten censorship and gain the ability to block unwanted statements before they even appear in the public sphere.

The Center notes that this initiative is yet another step toward strengthening state control over the information space in Russia.
