Ukrainian air defense forces shot down 82 drones and six "Banderole" drones
On the night of September 6, Russian forces attacked Ukraine with 108 air-attack weapons. Ukrainian air defense forces shot down 82 drones and six more “Banderole” loitering munitions—a total of 88 enemy targets.
The Russian army resumed its air attacks on Ukraine on the evening of September 5. The strikes continued into the night of September 6, with the enemy deploying a total of 108 weapons. According to preliminary data, Ukrainian defenders neutralized 88 aerial targets. Among them were 82 Russian drones and six “Banderol” loitering munitions. In other words, Ukrainian air defense forces intercepted most of the weapons that Russia launched at Ukrainian territory that night.
Russia has recently been using various types of drones for attacks with increasing frequency. In addition to strike drones, Russian forces are deploying decoy drones designed to complicate the work of Ukrainian air defense and force it to expend resources on aerial targets. Jet-powered drones pose a particular threat. They move significantly faster than conventional strike drones, making them harder to detect and intercept in time.
What Is a “Banderol”?
“Banderol” is a Russian loitering munition that Moscow began using during its attacks on Ukraine. It differs from conventional “Shaheds” and also poses a danger to Ukrainian cities and infrastructure. The Air Force has repeatedly reported the use of such munitions during Russian attacks.
In August, Ukrainian air defense forces neutralized over a hundred “Banderols.” This indicates that Russia is gradually increasing the number of such munitions in its air attacks. This time, the Ukrainian military also managed to intercept six such munitions.
Russia continues its massive attacks
The nighttime attack was yet another attempt by Russia to strike Ukraine with a large number of drones. The tactics of Russian forces involve more than just launching a large number of attack drones. The enemy simultaneously uses various types of drones, including strike drones, decoy drones, and new weapon systems. For Ukraine, this places an additional burden on its air defense system. Ukrainian military personnel must simultaneously detect airborne targets, assess their threat level, and select an interception method.
Aircraft, anti-aircraft missile forces, electronic warfare and unmanned systems units, as well as mobile fire groups of the Defense Forces, are involved in repelling such attacks. As a result of this attack, 88 out of 108 Russian munitions were neutralized. Thus, the majority of Russian aerial targets failed to reach their objectives thanks to the effectiveness of the Ukrainian air defense system. At the same time, information regarding possible hits and the consequences of the attack may be updated once emergency services have completed their work.
Russia continues to use drones as one of its main tools for striking Ukraine. The Ukrainian side, for its part, is developing its air defense system and seeking new ways to counter various types of Russian drones. Agents of the “ATESH” partisan movement claimed they destroyed a communications tower near Perm on the eve of the strike on the “Lukoil-Permnaftorgsintez” oil refinery.
