Video: A Russian drone struck the building of the National Academy of Sciences in Kyiv
On the afternoon of September 28, a Russian drone struck the building of the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine in Kyiv. Videos posted on social media show people still inside the building.
It is Ukraine’s highest self-governing scientific organization, which conducts and coordinates fundamental and applied research in the natural, technical, social, and humanities sciences.
The Academy was founded in 1918 by the government of the Ukrainian State under Hetman Pavlo Skoropadskyi. Its first president was the scientist Volodymyr Vernadsky.
Initially, it had three departments: History and Philology, Physics and Mathematics, and Social and Economic Sciences. As early as 1918–1919, the first research institutes began to be established within the Academy.
In the following decades, the institution changed its name several times: in 1921, it became the All-Ukrainian Academy of Sciences as part of the Ukrainian Soviet Socialist Republic, and in 1936, the Academy of Sciences of the Ukrainian Soviet Socialist Republic.
It received the name National Academy of Sciences in 1994.

The NAS of Ukraine comprises 159 scientific institutions, including research institutes, libraries, museums, botanical gardens, and other facilities. As of February 2026, the Academy had 175 academicians, 391 corresponding members, and 85 foreign members.
During the full-scale war, the buildings of the NAS of Ukraine’s institutions have been damaged on multiple occasions. According to the Academy, more than 300 facilities within its property complex have been completely destroyed or damaged.
