Amazon considers Ghana as partner to expand internet access — MyJoyOnline
Amazon is considering Ghana as a potential partner to expand broadband internet access in Africa following talks between President John Dramani Mahama and executives of the US technology company in New York, United States. The meeting took place on the sidelines of the 81st session of the UN General Assembly.
As MyJoyOnline reports, the parties discussed opportunities for cooperation in technology and digital connectivity. Amazon Senior Vice President and Chief Global Affairs and Legal Officer David Zapolsky described the talks with Mahama as productive and noted Ghana’s potential role in the company’s plans to expand access to broadband internet across the continent.
Access for underserved communities
The potential partnership could help extend high-speed internet to communities with insufficient coverage, particularly in rural areas. It could also create opportunities for digital companies and entrepreneurs.

The report notes that improved connectivity in Ghana could support digital education, healthcare service delivery, financial services, e-commerce, and other technology-based businesses.
Ghana’s investment plans
The talks with Amazon are part of President Mahama’s broader efforts to attract investment and technology partnerships with major US corporations. During a separate US–Ghana presidential roundtable in New York, he called for launching a new stage of bilateral relations focused on trade, investment, technology, skills development, and job creation rather than traditional development aid.
Potential cooperation with Amazon aligns with Ghana’s ambition to strengthen its position as a digital and technology hub in West Africa. The country’s attractiveness to international companies may also be reinforced by the location of the Secretariat of the African Continental Free Trade Area there.
