Attal filed a complaint over Russian interference ahead of the French elections
Former French Prime Minister and presidential candidate Gabriel Attal has filed a complaint regarding an alleged Russian disinformation campaign targeting him ahead of the 2027 presidential election.
Attal’s lawyers told French media that the complaint, filed on Friday, alleges possible foreign interference, manipulation of information, and fabrication of content that could harm France’s fundamental interests and the integrity of the upcoming election.
According to them, several accounts on the social media platform X—some of which posed as French and international media outlets—distributed fake video clips and news articles.
These posts attributed fabricated statements to Attal, intended to discredit him as a candidate.
Attal, who represents President Emmanuel Macron’s Renaissance party, had previously stated that he had been the victim of an attempt by Russia to interfere in the electoral process.
The politician also warned that attempts at destabilization could intensify in the run-up to the presidential election in April 2027.
Viginum, France’s national agency for combating online disinformation, confirmed that it had detected an information operation targeting Attal.
The agency noted that the campaign bears the hallmarks of pro-Russian disinformation tactics.
Attal is not the first French politician to report such attacks ahead of the presidential election. Previously, former Prime Minister Édouard Philippe and Raphael Glucksmann, a lawmaker from the center-left party, were the targets of suspected disinformation campaigns.
As a result, French law enforcement and government agencies are noting an increase in information operations ahead of the 2027 presidential campaign.
